Staff
Dr. Martin Main,
Program Leader Dr. Main began developing the Florida Master Naturalist Program in 1999
following a 1998 south Florida eco-heritage workshop. He realized the great
need for a professional development educational program on Florida's natural
history. "I believe that most people are genuinely interested and concerned
about nature and, that as they learn more, they're level
of interest
and concern increases. I was surprised, however, at the tremendous
response to the FMNP, which I think is a
very good indication that
Floridians will work hard to ensure healthy environments, clean
water, and diverse wildlife will
be available for future generations
to enjoy." Dr. Main received the 2005 National Wetlands education
and outreach
award for
his exemplary work on the FMNP.
Sandy K. Mickey, Program Coordinator Sandy, a native Floridian, joined the Florida Master Naturalist Program
in 2008 with
a background in environmental education and interpretation from around the
state of Florida. She worked for the US Fish and Wildlife Service for
five years, including as a Park Ranger at Merritt Island National Wildlife
Refuge in Titusville and as a Biological Technician in Vero Beach. Sandy
most recently
worked as the North Region Naturalist with the Brevard County
Environmentally Endangered Lands (EEL) Program. She obtained her
B.S.
degree in Fisheries and Wildlife Management from North Carolina State
University, and will graduate with her Master’s in Resource
Interpretation
from Stephen F. Austin State University in 2009. “I am very passionate
about conserving Florida’s natural areas by educating residents and visitors
about what Florida ecosystems have to offer, and I am excited to join the
Florida Master Naturalist Program to fulfill this passion,” Sandy says.
She enjoys hiking, bird-watching, kayaking and watching football and
basketball. She
moved to Naples with her husband Jay, their dog
Lincoln, and their three cats.
We would like to acknowledge the following University of Florida
personnel for their contributions to the FMNP:

Institutes, UF/IFAS. Shelby and the OCI office have worked with the FMNP
since the first
class went online in 2001. Shelby ensures that finances, class logistics
and materials are all in order. Her professionalism and enthusiasm make her
an
important asset to the FMNP.
- Julie Carson, UF/IFAS, SWFREC Media Coordinator. Julie assists
with press releases, developing booth displays, marketing the FMNP and
providing
edits for our
FMNP newsletters, flyers, brochures and curriculum.
- Buddy Walker, UF/IFAS, SWFREC Webpage Coordinator. Buddy
developed the template for this FMNP website and is currently developing a
new FMNP website to be active in 2009. He also assists with our
online surveys, online graduate database, online image gallery, and web
