Body- Dark, L 35", female has brown head and neck
Bill Description-Yellow, sharp
Leg Color- yellow
Other Characteristics-long snake-like neck
Status- throughout Florida
Reproduction-March to June, 3 - 6 white to light blue eggs laid in
colonies with other Anhingas, herons, or ibises.
Distribution-Breeds near Atlantic and Gulf coasts from North Carolina to
Texas.
Habitat-Open water, swamps, wet prairies and marshes
Diet-mainly fish
Call-low grunts
Fun facts -must spread their wings to dry after swimming
-feather structure is designed to become waterlogged
-skewer fish , flip them into the air, and gulp them down -often swim with body
submerged leaving head and long slender neck visible above the water,
"Snake-bird"
