Identifiers- mottled brown body 17", brown wings spotted white 44"
Adaptations- short yellow hooked bill for tearing, talon claws for capturing,
large wings for gliding over prey
Status
- Florida resident
Distribution- eastern U.S.A., N. California, Oregon
Habitat- swamps, lowland river bottoms
Reproduction- 2-3 white eggs, laid in abandoned cavities
Diet-
small mammals, invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles
Fun facts
- pair will nod and bow to each other
- male feeds incubating female
- call sounds like "who cooks for you?"
