Florida Black Bear
Ursus americanus

Florida Black Bear - Ursus americanus

Body- black, brown muzzle, 50-80", up to 300 lbs.
Other Characteristics- white chest spots
Status- scattered Florida populations, some populations listed as threatened
Reproduction- 2-3 cubs alternate years, cavity dens
Distribution- most of United States, absent in plains
Habitat- swamps, forests, hammocks
Diet- meat, fruit, nuts, reptiles, insects, plants (Omnivore)
Sign- grunts, uprooted plants, stumps, logs; claw/teeth scratches on trees;
5-toed track, larger hind print imprints ahead of front foot when walking
Fun facts - Florida bears do not hibernate, some in N. FL. go into a sleep (topor)
- excellent swimmers, climbers, and runners (speeds exceeding 30 mph)
- excellent sense of smell, intelligent mammals

Note - This bear photo was taken at the National Audubon Corkscrew Swamp
Sanctuary (May 2001).  The juvenile bear was gorging itself on the lower stems of
Fire Flag (Thalia geniculata) plants, which were very accessible due to low water levels.
