Height- shrub reaching up to 13 feet tall
Identifiers- leaves opposite, long lance-like leaves, small white
flowers,
dark purple berry-like drupes
Adaptations- leaves are foul smelling when crushed
Status- common in wet soils, ditch banks
Distribution- from Quebec to Florida, west to eastern Kansas
Habitat- wetland edges
Fun facts- berries and flowers are edible
- use caution; roots, stems, leaves and unripe berries are somewhat toxic
