Size- usually 6-8 feet, can reach 39 feet
Identifiers- opposite simple leaves, orange to pink mid ribs
- white tubular flowers, round drupe fruits, square stems
Adaptations- thick leaves, pubescent upper surface
Status
- south Florida *native* coastal shrub/tree
Distribution- Brevard to Manatee county coastline
Habitat- coastal hammocks, pinelands
Fun facts
- evergreen and cold tolerant
- pubescent leaf hairs discourage animal browsing
- white fragrant flowers excellent nectar source for humming birds
- drupe fruits eaten by wildlife
