Body- purple, 15”
Bill Description- short, red, yellow tip
Leg Color- yellow
Other Characteristics- blue frontal shield, immatures lack white flanks of moorhens
Status- Florida resident
Reproduction- 6 eggs, loose nests in marsh vegetation (under birds foot in photo)
Distribution- Florida, Texas, Arkansas, Carolinas.
Habitat- freshwater marshes, wet prairies, agricultural
Diet- frogs, spiders, invertebrates, vegetation
Call- squawking, cackling, guttural grunts
Fun facts-long toes allow walking on floating plants
-jerks head and tail when walking or swimming
