Great Egret - Casmerodius albus

Body- white, 39"
Bill Description-yellow, sharp
Leg Color- black
Other Characteristics- white breeding plumes
Status- throughout Florida
Reproduction-3 light blue eggs, stick platform, colony Distribution-Breeds from California south to Mexico, central US and along Atlantic coast. Winters in southern United States from coast to coast.
Habitat-shallow wetlands (marshes,shallow lake margins), agricultural fields, drainage ditches
Diet-fish, small birds, invertebrates
Call-guttural croak, loud squawks at nesting colonies
Fun facts -early in century,  hunted to near extinction  for  plumes, abundant again, due to conservation efforts
-methodical stalking hunter
