Identifiers- Upper wing; bright orange with black markings,
3 black/white dots on leading edge
- Under wing; brown with orange at base of forewing,
many large silver spots
Adaptations- member of the
brushfoot family, reduced
front legs covered with a brush of long scales
Status- found throughout the state, common in October
Distribution- Southeastern United States, Mexico, Central
America,
West Indies, and South America
Host Plants- Passion vines (Passiflora sp.), Lantana (Lantana
camara)
Habitat- hardwood hammocks, open sunny areas, over Gulf of
Mexico
Fun facts

- chrysalis is a mottled gray, resembling a dry, curled leaf
- during courting; males land in front of females and clap their wings
