Status- throughout Florida
Reproduction-3 eggs, high large stick nest
Distribution-breeds southeastern and western coastal
areas, and northern states. Some migrate to Central and South
America, others stay all year in southern Florida.
Habitat-coastal, large water bodies
Diet-mostly fish, amphibians, reptiles
Call-sharp whistle cries, repeated
Fun facts -declined rapidly in the mid-1900's,
likely due to DDT, conservation programs
(nest platforms) are restoring populations
-Greek myth of Pandion, whose two daughters were turned into birds
(swallow, nightingale) and chased by a man turned into a hawk, haliaetus
Greek for "sea eagle".
