Body- brown, 14"
Bill Description- short, pale, dark breeding ring
Leg Color- dark, lobed feet
Other Characteristics- dark eyes, short wing & tail
Status- Florida resident
Reproduction- 4-7 eggs laid in floating nests
Distribution- North to South America, abundant Gulf coast states
Habitat- ponds, marshes, salt water migration
Diet- fish, crustaceans, leeches, insects, vegetation
Call- cow-cow-cow
Fun facts - only grebe with 'chicken-like' bill
- grebes digest feathers, fish bones for strainers
- spring pairs sing duets
- have to run across the water to get airborne
