Size- 3-4"
Identifiers- orange brown, 5 white dots on forewing, black margins/veins,
- caterpillars; brown, black, yellow crossbands,
3 pair of antennae (Monarch has 2)
Adaptations- orange/black warning colors
Status
- fairly common S. Florida, less common N. Florida
Distribution- southern U.S.A., S. America
Habitat-coastal, wet/dry prairies, old fields
Fun facts
- toxins and colors ward off predators
- cannot withstand cold weather
- male abdomen brushes release
subduing compound during mating
