Body Size- Pink, L 32"
Bill Description-
Spoon shaped
Leg Color-
Red
Other Key Characteristics-
Orange tail, crimson shoulder. Juveniles are pale pink and white.
Status-
Resident, Species of special concern
Reproduction Cycle-
November-December: South Florida, April: Central/North Florida, 3 eggs, stick nests usually in mangroves near heron and ibis colonies.
Distribution-
Resident locally on coasts of Texas, Louisiana (rare), and southern Florida.
Habitat-
coastal flats, mangroves, marshes, shallow water agricultural areas
Diet-
Small fish, insects, or crustaceans
Call-
Low croaks and clucking sounds
Fun facts-
Detect food by touch (tactile feeder) sweeps bill from side to side.
-Early 1900's, population severely depleted,  regaining numbers.
