Body-white 36”, wing span 60”
Bill description- pale, heavy, curved
Leg Color- black, pink feet
Other Characteristics- black head, neck, wing tips
Status- Endangered (Federal/State), Florida resident
Reproduction Cycle- 2-4 white eggs,
stick nest in trees
Distribution- Florida to South Carolina, S. America
Habitat- swamps, marshes, ponds, mangroves, agricultural areas
Diet-fish, crayfish, mollusks, reptiles, amphibians
Call-humming, hissing, croak s
Fun facts-North America’s only native stork
-largest colonies; Ntl Audubon’s Corkscrew Swamp, Everglades National Park
-“grope-feed” with open bill (tactile feeder)
-featherless head, horny plate, “flint heads”
-nesting success depends on water level
-soar at high altitudes making dives, rolls
